The Camas bike crew: this RV totes round the Hart family, a group of young boys and girls (there’s at least 5 of them plus their parents) who are avid racers, showing up at any and all Portland bike events, from cross to mountain biking.
This morning I was volunteering at the Krugers farm crit race, directing cars, and I was delighted to see this bike-laden vehicle show up, full to the brim with this young, eager racing family.
Does the family that races together stay together? Surely!
Schizophrenic Brain Cells Created in The Lab
The neurological root of schizophrenia continues to baffle researchers, but a new cell model of the disease could provide fresh insights into the condition.
Fred Gage of the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California and colleagues took connective tissue cells from people with schizophrenia and programmed them to form stem cells. The team then coaxed these cells into becoming neurons that can be used to better understand their behaviour and to test new drug candidates.
Confirming previous work in cadavers, the neurons (pictured) made fewer connections with each other than would be expected from healthy neurons. Adding the antipsychotic Loxapine improved their connectivity. The new model removes some environmental influences and allows researchers to probe the biology underlying schizophrenia using live cells.

supposed to be 130 miles. 7 of 28 teams made the time cutoff for completing the course.
we powered through 110 miles of gravel and pavement, dust and grime, sweat and joy and a touch of suffering. it only took 10 hours, 10 liters of water, 2 gatorades, 2 cliff bars, 1 pound of trail mix, a banana, a breakfast sandwich and half a snickers bar to sustain me. someone with a fancy computer clocked in 6,000 calories spent.
needless to say, lots of pizza and beer was consumed post-ride.
we conquered the rapha gentleman’s race, NW, 2011.
